A map of Berlin
Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany in both population and area. It is known for it’s popular sites, tourist locations and festivals.
Berlin is widely known for its popular tourist sites, as seen below.
Berlin was founded in the 1200s by a guy called Albert the Bear. In the 1400s, German princes made Berlin the capital of Germany. This boosted Berlin as a popular city/state.
During World War 2, Berlin was almost destroyed. They were heavily bombed and were involved in quite gruesome fighting. Over 150,000 people from Berlin died in that awful tragedy.
Germany lost the war to the allies. They divided Germany into 2 different countries, East Germany and West Germany. The soviet union had harsh power and control over the East Germany. The other allies made West Germany a democracy. Berlin was the capital of East Germany but was also split between both sides (while Bonn was the capital of West Germany).
In 1949 to 1961, more than 2 million people left East Germany into West Berlin. To make sure people wouldn’t/couldn’t leave, East Germany built a wall around West Germany that was heavily guarded. This wall (aka The Berlin Wall) separated both sides for almost 30 years. The East Germany government fell apart in 1983 which started a movement of people starting to tear down the wall. Both sides were reunited in 1990 and Berlin was turned into the capital of Germany as a whole now.
Berlin has a strong culture of street art, theatre and opera, multiculturalism and lots and lots of festivals.
There are lots of different events and festivals that you can go to.
